Fence on slope

Choosing the Right Installation Method for Your Greenwood Fence

When it comes to installing a fence on uneven or sloped ground, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. At Greenwood Fence, we’ve seen everything from flat lawns to steep grades—and the installation method you choose will affect both the look and performance of your fence. Here’s a breakdown of the most common approaches and which ones we recommend.

Fence Cuts

Straight Top

The Straight Top method keeps the top of the fence perfectly level across your yard. Any gaps caused by the slope remain at the bottom.

  • Pros: Simple, fast, clean look along the top.
  • Cons: Uneven ground leaves visible gaps that may need backfilling for a finished look.

Racking

Racking involves angling rails and boards so the fence follows the exact contour of the land.

  • Pros: Creates a seamless appearance close to the ground.
  • Cons: Very labor-intensive, requires precise angled cuts, more material, and higher cost.

Some highly skilled installers can achieve excellent results with racking, but it’s not recommended for most projects.

Stepping

Stepping is the most common and practical method. Each section is installed parallel to the next, forming a stair-step pattern that moves with the slope.

  • Pros: Faster installation, less cutting, and highly reliable.
  • Cons: Creates a visible step effect, though many homeowners find this attractive.

At Greenwood Fence, we generally recommend Stepping combined with backfilling if needed. It provides the cleanest look without the complexity of racking.

Regrading the Surface

Sometimes the best option is to regrade the land before installing the fence. This involves cutting or filling dirt to create a level surface.

  • Pros: Produces a perfectly straight and uniform fence line.
  • Cons: More expensive and not always practical depending on the property.

Greenwood’s Recommendation

In most cases, Stepping is the ideal solution. It’s efficient, durable, and adaptable to nearly any slope. Combined with smart backfilling, it achieves a polished, professional appearance without the extra cost or labor of more complex methods.

Whether you’re a DIY homeowner, a contractor, or working on a commercial property, Greenwood Fence’s modular system makes installation easier, faster, and more precise—every time.
