Caring for & Cleaning Your Fence
Dirt & Debris
As with most outdoor building materials, Spring and Fall are the best times to care for your Composite Greenwood Fence (GWF). GWF recommends cleaning the Composite Fence Boards with a combination of a gentle dish soap, hot water and a soft, non-abrasive bristle brush or cloth. For the Aluminum Posts and Rails, we recommend using the same cleaning combination applied with a sponge. Before the cleaning process begins, hose down any surface debris that may have built up. While cleaning your Composite Fence, be sure to thoroughly rinse all soap off and towel dry all remaining water before the sun does. The optimal cleaning times for your composite fence are when sunlight and heat are at off-peak hours (typically, early morning or late afternoon).
IMPORTANT PRESSURE WASHING TIP
If using a pressure washer, follow the same steps as above. We recommend using a wide fan tip at pressures under 1500 psi and at distance of 12” or more. Exercise extreme caution, as improper usage of a pressure washer can damage an installed fence. Upon completion and a thorough rinse, once again, be to dry off each panel before the sun does to avoid any potential mineral deposits.
Mineral Deposits from Hard Water
Although very uncommon, mineral deposits can appear in certain areas where the water has high amounts of mineral deposits like lime, calcium, silica or rust. These deposits leave behind what is also referred to as a “hard water stain”. These deposits can leave behind an unsightly white residue (most noticeable darker tones) that will need to be cleaned. This is not a defect with Greenwood Fence composite board but an issue with the water itself. Generally, these can be cleaned with diluted white vinegar in the steps below. Ultimately, if hard water is present you will need to reconfigure your sprinkling system to prevent hard water from sprinkling on the fence.
Stains From Concrete Dust & Construction Debris
Composite Fence Boards should be protected during any concrete setting and related construction work. Like Hard Water Stains, concrete dust and other construction debris can mix with water and evaporate on the fence boards, leaving behind a white haze that will need to be cleaned to restore the composite to its original color. This is not a defect with Greenwood Fence composite board but an issue with the concrete dust reaction to water and heat. Generally, these can be cleaned with diluted white vinegar in the steps below. If construction work is being performed after the fence is up and installed, we recommend protecting it with a tarp to avoid any such issues.
Cleaning Your Fence
- Pour an equal amount of white vinegar and water into a bucket so the vinegar is diluted to 50/50 (Ensure that the mixture is well mixed together).
- Apply the mixture to the composite boards and leave it on for approximately 10 minutes.
- After allowing the mixture to sit, begin scrubbing the composite boards with a soft bristle brush for 1-2 minutes. Be sure to clean within seams of the boards as well as the in the embossed pattern of each board.
- Take water and rinse off the cleaned area and dry off with a towel.
Depending on the severity of the stain, this process may need to be repeated to fully remove the stain.
