Pro Tips for Installing Horizontal Fences on Uneven Ground

If you’ve ever installed a fence, you know one thing for sure—most ground isn’t perfectly flat. Whether you’re a seasoned contractor or a determined DIYer, uneven terrain can be a challenge when working with horizontal fence slats. At Greenwood Fence, we’ve developed a few tried-and-true methods to make sure your fence comes out straight, level, and looking sharp every time.

Start with a String Line

One of the most reliable techniques starts with setting a string line at the height where the top of your bottom rail should sit. Use a level to make sure your string is perfectly straight. Then:

  • Raise each surface spacer until its top touches the string line
  • Attach the spacer to the post with the provided self-tapping screws
  • Repeat the process for the other end of the rail, checking level along the way

By keeping that string line tight and level, you ensure your first rail is perfectly set—which makes the rest of the installation much easier.

The “Boards First” Method

Another popular approach is to wait to secure the spacers until all the composite boards are in place. This method allows you to visually confirm that the boards line up across each panel before finalizing the height. Because the boards are heavier, you’ll need a crowbar to lift each section for alignment and fixing.
It’s worth noting that many fences you see online appear uneven because installers haven’t reached this leveling stage yet. Taking the time to do it right will make a world of difference in your final result.

Finishing Touches Matter

Once the fence sections are installed and approved by the client, cut the posts down to their final height. This is a critical step—only cut once you’re absolutely certain about the height, because you can’t add material back once it’s gone.
After trimming:

  • Insert the filler strip into the top of each exposed post slot
  • Press the aluminum post caps into place (no screws needed—they’re secured by pressure)
